Kimball Physics is a high-tech manufacturer of scientific instruments,
with 30 years of experience in ultra-high-vacuum electron and ion optics.
The company specializes in precision electrostatic and magnetostatic optics,
with beam energies ranging from 1 eV to 100 keV, and beam currents ranging
from femtoamperes to amperes. Most units are low power devices. An MIT
spinoff, the company is in a half dozen buildings, situated near the top of
a hill, surrounded by woods, in southern New Hampshire.
Kimball Physics designs and manufactures electron optics used all over
the world. Areas of involvement include: numerous UHV analytical instruments
based on electron and ion optics, electron optical equipment for the
semiconductor industry, electron sources for electron microscopes and
electron lithography, sources for free electron lasers, accelerators, and
x-ray systems, fittings and components for general ultra-high vacuum use,
custom apparatus for the space industry, and equipment for various esoteric
physics experiments.
Kimball Physics is a company run by physicists, ready to assist customers
in solving practical, technical, and basic research problems. A staff of
outside consultants augments in-house expertise. The company maintains
facilities for: source R & D, particle optics design, mechanical cad design,
electronics engineering, vacuum engineering, UHV testing, materials
characterization, precision mechanical fabrication,
joining, brazing,
welding, and electronics manufacturing. Unusual capabilities exist in micromanufacturing.
Products include: electron gun and ion gun subsystems, with associated
electronics, ready to attach to customer UHV vacuum systems; emitters,
Multi-CF™ Fittings (special vacuum components including
instrument housings and vacuum chambers), eV Parts® (parts and raw materials
from which customers can assemble their own designs); feedthroughs, particle
detectors, and electronics — all related to the generation, propagation,
control, and detection, of particle beams.
Applications include: surface physics (ESD, RHEED, IPES,
Cathodoluminescence, Charge Neutralization, Heating, Phosphor Testing and
Research, etc), analytical instruments, space research, semiconductor
processing, semiconductor research, vacuum processing, and various special
projects. Considerable design and manufacturing is directed towards OEM
customer applications. Kimball Physics equipment has been on several space
shuttle and rocket missions.
Many standard electron and ion sources, guns, power supplies, and
components are offered in this website. Many others are not. About one-fifth
of the items manufactured are custom, with only a fraction of these
eventually produced as standard catalog items. Thus if you do not see what
you need, please contact engineering. An on-line custom design request
form has been
included in this website. Filling out this form encourages most
of the important design parameters to be addressed.
